Training Effectiveness Verified

Know whether your training investment paid off

Most retailers can prove their employees completed compliance training. Almost none can prove the training changed behavior. The BARS Program closes that gap by independently checking carding behavior month over month and tying the outcome back to who was trained, when, and on what.

30 to 90 dayshow fast compliance training fades without reinforcement

What it is

Training effectiveness measures whether the training your team paid for changed behavior at the register.

A completion certificate documents attendance. It does not prove an associate will ask for ID at 11:47 PM on a Saturday with six people in line. Only measuring the behavior at the register proves that. And because your team knows a check could be any customer, the BARS check reinforces your training.

How BARS measures training effectiveness

Every check captures who was at the register, then ties that back to their training record.

01

Capture the check detail

Associate name, employee ID, store, shift time, product category, and outcome, on every check.

02

Cross-reference training records

Against We Card, ServSafe Alcohol, TIPS, or your internal LMS completion data.

03

Analyze by cohort

By curriculum, certification date, and tenure.

04

Identify training opportunities

Reporting and Trend Analysis shows when behavior starts to drift after a certification.

Why course completion is not enough

Compliance training fades within 30 to 90 days without reinforcement. Measurement answers the questions a training department never could on its own.

  • Which curriculum produces the highest sustained pass rate
  • How long behavior change lasts after a certification
  • Which shifts and dayparts show the most carding drift
  • Whether new hires reach baseline before their 90-day mark

What it looks like in the data

By the numbers

Every check

is tagged to an associate, a shift, and a training record, so the gap between completion and behavior is finally measurable.

Drawn from 7,500,000+ compliance checks since 1997, roughly 40,000 a month.

BARS does a great job. We have seen a return on our investment by educating our employees in TIPS. They can properly handle the sale of alcohol and tobacco.

Common questions

Do you integrate with our LMS?
BARS exports check data as a CSV, a scheduled email summary, or a direct feed to your home-office system. Compliance and L&D teams routinely match it to LMS completion records. Direct API integration is available for enterprise clients on request.
Will measuring individual employees create labor concerns?
BARS is a coaching tool, not a disciplinary one. That is why the Red Card goes into the associate's hand with the coaching attached, and why most clients use individual-level data to spot refresher needs and to recognize high performers. BARS advises against using a single Red Card as cause for termination.
Can you measure behaviors beyond carding, like POS prompts being honored?
Yes. A BARS check reinforces that associates use the register properly. If the system prompts for ID and the associate overrides it, the check captures the override and the outcome. Store Operation feedback on cleanliness, service, and merchandising is available on the same visit as a value-added service.
